The Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) is the professional body for libraries, librarians and information workers in New Zealand. Its vision is "To be the vibrant, vital professional voice for those engaged in librarianship and information management".

The Public Libraries Special Interest Group is part of LIANZA. Its purpose is "To promote and support the development of public library services and the librarians who work in them."

Te Ropu Whakahau is the professional association for Māori who work in libraries, archives and information services. Its mission is to "encourage Māori participation in library and information work and educational resourcing".

The largest public libraries work together in an association known as Metronet. Metronet represents metropolitan public libraries serving populations of greater than 50,000 people. It is a dynamic group of library managers who meet regularly with the aim of sharing knowledge and continuously improving the service provided by public libraries of New Zealand.

The National Library of New Zealand's role is "to collect and maintain literature and information resources that relate to New Zealand and the Pacific, make this information readily available and preserve New Zealand's documentary heritage for generations to come". The National Library maintains the Te Puna Web Directory which provides access to the websites of New Zealand organisations.
